by Mac Sisson
ARKADELPHIA-Both Ouachita Baptist University basketball teams suffered Gulf South Conference defeats to teams from the University of Central Arkansas on Monday night at Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.
The first place UCA Sugar Bears triumphed over the Lady Tigers by a score of 80-68 in the first game, while the Bears took a 72-66 victory in the second ballgame of the evening.
The Sugar Bears (11-3, 4-1) managed the win despite a 32-point night by Ouachita guard Crystal Allen. The Linden, Texas sophomore was 12 of 21 from the field, including two of five from the three point distance. She hit six of seven from the free throw line and grabbed eight rebounds. For the evening, she represented slightly less then 50 percent of the entire offensive production of Garry Crowder's team (10-4, 2-2).
Ron Marvel's Sugar Bears were led by guard Kristin Frase with 21 points, including a perfect nine for nine from the line. Following her in point production was guard Katie Ferguson with 14, post Bekka Middleton with 13, and forward Traci Graham with 10. UCA post Alisha Standridge equaled Ouachita's Allen in rebounds with eight.
The game was decided, for the most part, at the free throw line where UCA hit 29 of 35. A hard playing Sugar Bear team forced a lethargic OBU team into 26 turnovers and 26 fouls.
Both teams played it close to the vest in the first half with the score knotted at 28-28 at intermission. The Lady Tigers managed a six point lead at 38-32 on two free throws by Allen with 14:58 to play in the game. OBU kept a two to four point lead until the 6:28 mark when Frase connected on a jump shot to tie the score 54-54. From the point the momentum shifted noticeably to the Sugar Bears as they went on a 13-3 run climbing to a 10-point on a three-pointer by Frase with 2:36 to play. UCA pushed the difference to 13 points, 78-65 with 23 seconds to play on a free throw by Ferguson.
UCA scored 19 points off Ouachita turnovers.
In the men's game, the matchup was much closer as two evenly matched teams for the evening saw multiple lead changes.
The Tigers (3-11, 1-3) were led by senior guard T.J. Jones with 14 points. Jarris Kentle added 12, while Mauricio Watson added 11 and Tim Lane scored 10. Lane led the Tigers in rebounds with six.
Cedric Nickelberry of UCA (7-7, 4-1) led all scorer with 24 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. Teammate Luke Rowan scored 11 points.
As a team, OBU hit 21 of 48 from the field for 36 percent, while the Bears scored 23 of 52 for 44 percent. From the free throw line, the Tigers hit 19 of 27 for 70 percent, while the Bears connected on 23 of 34 for 68 percent. Conference leading UCA won the rebounding war, 34-32.
The Bears held a five point lead at halftime, 29-24.

UCA kept the lead after the half until Ouachita's Jones hit a bucket at 10:49 to move the Tigers to their first lead of the half at 42-41. Ouachita kept the lead until UCA forced a tie, 50-50 with 6:53 to play on a field goal by Rowan. OBU took back the lead at 53-52 on a free throw by freshman post Richard Whaley with 5:57 on the clock. UCA answered with points, but OBU's Jarris Kentle tied it for the final time at 57-57 with 3:45 to play. From that point, the Bears were in control as Shannon Lee hit a three pointer with 3:35 to play and the Bears were off to the races.
