Tigers Take Loss in Mississippi

CLEVELAND, MISSISSIPPI-The Delta State University Statesmen had a blistering second half shooting performance coupled with an effective free throw demonstration Saturday night in turning back a challenge by the visiting Ouachita Baptist University Tigers in claiming the 2000-2001 Gulf South Conference opener for both teams, 93-69, at DSU's Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Mississippi.
The Statesmen (6-3, 1-0) held a slim 35-31 lead at intermission, but came out in the second half and hit a sizzling 79 percent of their shots (19 of 24) from the field. Ouachita (2-8, 0-1), while having some problems on defense, nonetheless answered with a 56 percent field goal accuracy (15 of 27) in the closing half.
For the game, Delta also found a home at the line hitting 27 of 35 to Ouachita's seven of 10. The Tigers committed 27 fouls to DSU's 16.
The game's leading scorer was Ouachita forward Tim Lane with 23 points. The Cleburne, Texas product was 10 of 13 from the field, including three of five from the three-point line, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Ouachita point guard T.J. Jones of Conway scored 18 points, while forward Mauricio Watson responded with 12.
The Statesmen were led by Walter Jackson with 19 points and nine rebounds. Dennis Douglas scored 18 and Momir Gajic recorded 10 points.
Ouachita was outrebounded in the contest, 33-22. As a team, Mike Reynolds' Tigers hit 26 of 51 from the field for 51 percent, while DSU went 29 of 53 for 55 percent. The Tigers had 12 points from their bench, while Delta had 41 points. Delta stole the ball nine times from the Tigers, while OBU netted four steals off DSU mistakes.
The Tigers will try to reverse a four game losing streak when they host the Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys in GSC action on Thursday night at 8 p.m. at OBU's Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.
